This is an imaginative book using an approach based on Heidegger’s philosophic analysis of technology. It explores the missing presence of the person in online learning, especially in terms of the social and emotional aspects of learning. It presents a basis for further understanding the experience of online learning, and ultimately asks whether the efficiency it affords undergraduates can ever replace what is learned in a classroom with other people. It also challenges the idea of “personalization” by exploring the collective value of collaborative in-person learning.
