14% Annual Growth in Registrations in Online Learning in Ontario Exceed Canada’s National Average of 10%

Eight other key findings of Ontario’s 24 public colleges and 22 public universities found in the National Survey of Online and Digital Learning 2019 Ontario Report conducted by the Canadian Digital Learning and Research Association are:

  • Widespread use of Open Educational Resources (OERs);
  • High adoption of technologies for teaching and learning, such as Learning Management Systems (LMS), video technologies, mobile technology, and social media;
  • Large offerings of badges, micro-credentials, and stackable credits;
  • Expectations of online course registrations to increase in the coming year;
  • Integration of online learning in long-term planning;
  • Desire to innovate online offerings to improve access, improve quality, and to deliver experiential learning opportunities for workforce skill development and training;
  • Recognition of the need for digital fluency training and professional development for faculty teaching online.

New Staffing and Design Strategies to Better Serve Online Learners at McMaster University, Ontario

Explore how the Centre for Continuing Education at McMaster University, Ontario responded to increased online enrolments by changing its staffing model to expand instructional design support, as well as increasing focus on applied learning and online teaching. For example, the Centre recently embraced lean design for its online courses, using ‘live’ online teaching with instructors presenting ideas, building on content, offering examples and reviewing complex concepts.
