A Vision of the Future of Online Learning in the Age of AI

Over the past year or so, the latest advance in artificial intelligence — large language models — took the world by storm. AI is now clearly an unstoppable force, meaning education can no longer be an immovable object.

Digital and online learning has matured, with its viability proven through three years of remote learning, but education is grounded by social, cultural and economic imperatives. These imperatives, for good reason, resist change.

This paper maps the future of education and technology over the next few decades, looking at technological advancements, personalized learning, challenges for teachers and students in a rapidly changing world, and how these questions will shape the future of education.

As Contact North | Contact Nord explores these possibilities and issues, it becomes clear that the transformation of education is inevitable. This paper offers insights into what this transformative journey will entail.

In this engaging and interactive presentation, Dr. Philippa Hardman, affiliate scholar at the University of Cambridge, learning scientist and creator of DOMStm, introduces participants to the story so far of AI and education, and explores how to use it to design, teach and assess learning.
