How to Apply a Low-Tech Approach for Successful Remote Learning: 10 Proven Principles, 12 Dos and 12 Don’ts

Thursday, November 12, 2020
10:00 am – 11:00 am (Eastern Time)

Some instructors approach remote teaching with trepidation, assuming they have to be innovative in their use of synchronous technologies and produce cinema quality video and outstanding simulations.

Yet all their students want to do is learn, feel connected and feel a sense of ownership of their learning.

At the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning developed a low-tech, high-touch approach to the challenge of remote teaching, which places the emphasis on simplicity, connectedness and directness.

In this 1-hour free webinar, Shanali Govender, lecturer and Tasneem Jaffer Senior Project Coordinator and Learning Designer at the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching (CILT), outlines:

  • 10 principles of remote teaching, ranging from “use what is available” and “be kind to yourself and empathic towards your students”.
  • 12 Dos which improve the experience of teaching and learning for all.
  • 12 Don’ts which are things to avoid when teaching online. Key Takeaways
  • How to provide structure, focus and support for remote learners.
  • Ways to use “what is available” rather than creating resources from scratch.
  • How to engage learners and keep them active.
  • Ten common mistakes in remote teaching (things not to do).

Host:

Shanali Govender
Lecturer, University of Cape Town

Shanali is a lecturer within the Staff Development unit at CILT. She has worked in three South African institutions of higher education, and has strong interests in the scholarship  of learning and teaching. Her position in the staff development team is to support part-time and non-permanent teaching staff. She has designed several online staff development short courses, and teaches on Core Concepts in Learning and Teaching, and an online introduction to assessment.  While continuing to work in the field of staff development at UCT, she is working towards her PhD, exploring the experiences of non-permanent staff who teach in higher education.

Tasneem Jaffer
Senior Project Coordinator and Learning Designer, University of Cape Town

Tasneem is an Online Learning Designer and Project Co-ordinator  for the UCT Formal Online Project and a researcher on the MOOC Takers Research Project. She worked in the field of user experience (UX), where she used her analytical and research skills to recommend best practices and ways in which to improve the usability of government websites.

She completed her Master's degree in educational technology in 2016  where her research topic focused on students' perceptions of wrapped MOOCs at UCT. She has an undergraduate degree in Information Systems, which had a strong impact on her analysis and technical background.

She is really interested in learning the workings of designing blended and online courses and as a serial MOOC taker, she is excited to experience the behind the scenes aspects of creating a MOOC. Tasneem has designed multiple MOOCs for the Coursera platform and is currently working on coordinating and developing online degrees.
