Throughout the world, more than 65 open universities provide open and equal access to education. Open universities do not require any formal education or credentials to be admitted. The world’s 10 largest open universities have a combined enrolment exceeding 16.5 million students, with the largest numbers in Asia followed by Africa and Europe.

Open universities currently use a range of pedagogical approaches and delivery modes ranging from print, to radio and television, online, blended learning or combinations of these delivery forms.

They have a common commitment to open access to quality learning and student success.

Using iBook Author and iPads to Manage Content for Pre-Medical Students and Faculty at the Department of Medicine, Université de Sherbrooke, Québec

Being overwhelmed with paper, Professor Doan Hoa Do started experimenting with transferring all his cardiology course notes to an iPad and then making the material available to students. Professor Do conducted a pilot test with 20 volunteer students, but subsequently, 400 students (all new pre-med students) are participating in a larger pilot study over four years. Reduced printing costs and increased student and faculty productivity have resulted as iPad use has spread throughout the Faculty. Full story

2017 Top Ten Books on Online Learning

2017 was a strong year for books and publications on teaching and learning in the digital age, whether through online, blended, open, or technology-enhanced learning. We selected top ten books which capture the best ideas and practices in 2017. Full Story

In this new Contact North I Contact Nord series, How Higher Education Institutions Around the World Are Applying Open Education Resources (OER) In New and Diverse Ways, thirteen examples of how OER are developed, integrated and used for teaching, learning and organizational change are presented.

Two OER applications come from universities in British Columbia, Canada:

Francophone OER Awareness Day

Join colleagues at La Cité collégiale in Ottawa on February 21, 2018, for the first Francophone Open Education Awareness event. The event, sponsored by eCampusOntario, will provide Francophone educators, administrators and students with an opportunity to connect and discuss the potential impact of open practice in the Francophone community. The event will gather experts, enthusiasts and other interested parties from across Ontario and French-speaking Canada to share in the event.
