Back to (online) School using the Community of Inquiry Model

As a design and practice framework for creating engaging online courses, the Community of Inquiry (COI) model is a powerful and effective approach. It is used extensively since first introduced in 2000 in online courses at the college, university and K-12 levels.

In this webinar, Professor Terry Anderson, one of the co-authors of the COI model, explores the following five questions:
• What skills and abilities must be developed for teachers and learners to fully leverage the power of Communities of Inquiry? What are the prerequisites for effective learning?
• What are we learning from the growth of peer-to-peer learning and peer assessment, which supports the power of Communities of Inquiry?
• What can emerging technology approaches to adaptive learning and adaptive assessment bring to the practice of Communities of Inquiry?
• What are the known best practices and emerging best practices for Communities of Inquiry?
• What are examples of Communities of Inquiry in action from a variety of settings around the world?

Terry Anderson, PhD is a Professor Emeritus and former Canada Research Chair in the Centre for Distance Education and the Technology Enhanced Knowledge Research Centre at Athabasca University, Alberta, Canada and a Contact North | Contact Nord Research Associate. Terry was part of the research group that created the Community of Inquiry model, the most widely cited model for both course development and teaching research in online education. He publishes widely in the area of distance education and educational technology and co-authored and/or edited 10 books, and numerous papers. Terry’s books and research articles have, since 2004, been published under open access licenses to maximize their availability to all distance education practitioners, students and researchers. Terry is active in provincial, national, and international distance education associations and is a regular keynote presenter at professional and academic conferences.
