Contact North | Contact Nord’s Pockets of Innovation Showcase Webinar Series features new and innovative online teaching practices from Ontario’s public colleges and universities. These practices are featured in Contact North | Contact Nord’s Pockets of Innovation Series, which includes more than 220 examples since 2011.

Read 10 Lessons from a Post-Pandemic World – Teaching & Learning in the Digital Age

The COVID-19 pandemic forced nearly all colleges and universities to move their classes to emergency online learning in March 2020.

Canada’s post-secondary system responded amazingly well to the challenge of adapting its programs and courses for online delivery and providing support services to its students during the pandemic. While the system proved its resilience, there are lessons we can collectively learn and unlearn from the pandemic experience as the planning starts for 2021-2022 and beyond.

Building on his observations and direct experience during the pandemic and his 40 years in the distance and online world, Contact North | Contact Nord Research Associate Dr. Tony Bates gives us 10 Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World to improve both the quality of the learning experience and outcomes for students in the future.

How to Create Active and Engaging Learning Experiences with Zoom Breakout Rooms

Friday, November 20, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (ET)

Zoom’s breakout rooms provide a unique opportunity to learn to create active and engaging learning experiences for students.

Join Contact North | Contact Nord’s Research Associate, Dr. Ron Owston, who describes how educators can:

  • Move beyond holding ineffective, unstructured breakout room discussions
  • Create distinctive breakout room roles for students to promote active participation
  • Employ a variety of tools and techniques to enhance breakout room experiences
  • Pre-assign students to breakout rooms or allow them to chose their own
  • Design creative ways for students to report breakout room outcomes to the whole class
  • Make use of breakout rooms in large enrolment courses

Participants have ample opportunity to ask questions during the webinar.
